Home Energy Budgets
a presentation by UNCW's Roger Shew

Mr. Shew will talk about energy sources and costs for the home/car owner, including information on small changes individuals can make that add up to big money and emissions savings. Mr. Shew graduated from UNCW with a BA in Earth Sciences (1976). He went to UNC-Chapel Hill for his Master's in Geology (1979) before joining Shell Oil Company. Mr. Shew worked for Shell for 20 years in New Orleans and Houston where he was a development geologist, researcher, and finally geology instructor for Shell. His work included onshore and offshore research and training on reservoir characterization (seismic, well logs, core); in particular on deep-water depositional systems. While working, he also attended the Univ. of Houston and received his MSci.Ed. (1995). Mr. Shew left Shell, though he still consults, to come back home in 1999 to volunteer. He started teaching part-time at UNCW, which evolved into full time in the Dept. of Geography and Geology and Dept. of Environmental Science; he teaches Intro to Graduate level courses including a course on sustainability. His interests include geoscience education and science curriculum development.
